Lou Walsh is a marriage and individual therapist who specializes in love and intimacy issues. Whether in individual or couples therapy, Lou believes in emphasizing individual exploration in her work. Relational problems travel many paths, including addiction, codependence, anxiety, depression, and more; therefore, a focus on romantic relationships can encompass a wide variety of the topics Lou addresses.
Lou is a student of several of the “Old Masters” of psychological learning, including Carl Jung, Eric Berne, Carl Rogers, Domeena Renshaw and Patricia Allen. She employs the contributions of these and others with an emphasis on continual learning in her work.
Before beginning her private practice, Lou worked at Genesis Therapy Center in Chicago, counseling married or committed couples, as well as individuals looking for or wanting to maintain healthy relationships. Genesis, a not-for-profit group whose mission it is to offer reasonably priced therapy to survivors of childhood abuse, was a rich experience. Lou continues to employ the principles and instruction she received there in her work today.
As a student, Lou counseled domestic violence victims at Apna Ghar, a shelter in Chicago founded to address the needs of South Asian women and children. While there, she ran psychotherapy groups, educated the staff and residents about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and created mother-and-child play therapy with puppets, storytelling and games.
Lou is a graduate of University of Illinois, Chicago, and received her Master of Counseling Psychology degree from Illinois School of Professional Psychology.
Lou performs her own style of community outreach by giving talks on romantic issues, and doing pro-bono work with members of Chicago’s artistic community.
